Material:Made of Stainless Steel to avoid cracking and excessive heat. Effective anti-oxidation,anti-rust,anti-corrosion. Usage:Replace the factory banjo bolt mounted on the top side of the pressure relief valve. Features:Maintain fuel rail pressure during high engine load conditions. Prevent high-pressure fuel from being returned to the fuel tank. The fuel pressure regulator is an engine management component that is found in one form or another on virtually all internal combustion engines.
Different engine operating conditions will require different amounts of fuel, which can be metered by changing the fuel pressure. Many fuel pressure regulators use vacuum operated mechanical diaphragms to change the pressure, though there are vehicles that are equipped with electronic fuel pressure regulators.
Because the fuel pressure regulator plays a direct role in the distribution of fuel to the engine, any issues with the component can potentially cause performance issues and other problems for the vehicle. Usually a faulty fuel pressure regulator will produce a few symptoms that will alert the driver of a potential issue.
One of the first symptoms of a possible issue with the fuel pressure regulator is engine performance issues. A faulty fuel pressure regulator may cause the vehicle to experience misfiresa reduction in power and acceleration, and a drop in fuel efficiency. These symptoms can also be caused by a wide variety of other issues so having the vehicle properly diagnosed is highly recommended.
A faulty regulator can not only leak gasoline, which is a potential safety hazard, but can also cause performance issues as well.
A fuel leak will usually produce a noticeable fuel smelland may also cause engine performance issues. If the fuel pressure regulator leaks or fails internally, it may cause the vehicle to emit black smoke from the tail pipe.
A faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause the vehicle to run excessively rich, which apart from reducing mpg and performance, can cause the vehicle to produce black smoke from the tailpipe. Black smoke can also be caused by a variety of other issues, so having the vehicle properly diagnosed is highly recommended. While some fuel pressure regulators are built into the fuel pump assembly, most fuel pressure regulators are mounted in the fuel rail and can be serviced independently of the rest of the system.
If you suspect that your vehicle may be having an issue with the fuel pressure regulator have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if it should be replaced. Low rail pressure may or may not cause an MIL check engine light. This is a very common problem that we hear about from our Duramax customers. This may only happen in high fuel demand situations like towing or racing but it can also happen with everyday use.
May include one or all and not limited to; Low power, poor shifting quality, excessive smoke, engine limp mode, reduced mpg. Normal maintenance goes a long way in helping your truck survive in high demand situations.
Most fuel pressure issues are not caused by tuning if the tuning was done correctly for the current modifications on the truck. A quality lift pump from Airdogliftpumps. This holds true for stock or modified trucks. Your email address will not be published. February 27, By: Rob Coddens. Actual fuel rail pressure is not keeping up with desired fuel rail pressure.
Symptoms: May include one or all and not limited to; Low power, poor shifting quality, excessive smoke, engine limp mode, reduced mpg. Causes and repairs: Dirty fuel filter is the most common issue we see when fuel rail pressure is low. When in doubt, change the filter!
This is about a 30 minute job that can be done without any special tools. The filter head is the part that the fuel filter screws into and has the primer plunger incorporated into it.
There are O-rings and seals that break down with age and use. The water separator screws into the bottom of the filter itself and must be replaced if cracked or damaged.A fuel pump check valve is a component of a mechanical fuel pump, which is found on many vehicles that were manufactured before electronic injection.
The check valve is designed to make the fuel in the vehicle only flow in the correct direction from the fuel pump and to maintain pressure.
A fuel pressure gauge can be used to test the amount of fuel pressure when the vehicle is running. If the amount of pressure is lower than the specifications for your car, the check valve may need to be replaced. This is due to the lack of pressure, which allows the fuel to flow back into the pump. If the check valve is bad, the car may be unable to start. If the car does not start, turning the key so that it is one click away from starting, then repeating this process several times, may build up enough pressure so that the vehicle starts.
If that is the case, the check valve is bad and needs to be replaced. This article was written by the It Still Works team, copy edited and fact checked through a multi-point auditing system, in efforts to ensure our readers only receive the best information.

Low fuel rail pressure is a very common issue we see on Duramax trucks. It is an issue that has an array of different degrees but can leave you stranded on the side of the road if not recognized and dealt with. If you have any of the following symptoms it is time to dig in and data log the truck to see if you can watch the issue occur in real-time. Below you can see a screen shot of a truck that was experiencing low fuel rail pressure.
However, it may go unnoticed under light operation. Either way it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Any consistent deviation between commanded and actual fuel rail pressure that is more than 1, PSI should be addressed immediately. When addressing the issue you want to start with the cheaper and easier repairs and work your way up to the top.
Here is a check list to follow:. Most fuel rail pressure issues can be avoided with routine maintenance, additional filtration lift pumpand not ignoring minor issues. Keep your fuel filters clean and fresh, invest in a lift pump, keep a Race Fuel Valve handy, and purchase fuel at reputable sources to keep yourself from being stranded on the side of the road with low rail pressure issues. If your water heater dumped overflow out the Temp and Pressure valve would you A replace it with a higher rated unit or a plug, or B Find the cause and fix the cause?
In normal operation the safety valve should never be activated. No fuel should ever escape past this valve unless there is an over pressure condition. What can happen is that flow demand can cause pressure cycling due to restriction in the system or increased demand from a performance program. The ECM has a hard time controlling the regulator precisely so the pressure starts to oscillate from under to over the desired pressure.
Eventually the pressure spikes above the set point of the valve causing it to discharge fuel. This fuel comes out VERY hot and in turn tends to weaken the spring in this valve. Eventually the spring weakens to lower the set point to a pressure at or even below desired system pressure. I should note that the LB7 has really not been prone to facing this issue.
This is likely due to the sheer size of the components of this relief valve plus the continual flow of system return fuel across the end of the valve assembly.
Image 1 shows the hose that we are working with in its native state. Some parts removed for better photo detail. Image 2 shows the U shaped return hose removed from the fuel rail.
This hose is then plugged. A new length of hose is attached to the now vacant port on the fuel rail and run to a bottle hence the name bottle test. The vehicle is started and the bottle observed for fuel discharge. If no fuel is present in the bottle then a test drive is performed and hard acceleration is used to command maximum rail pressure.
If any fuel discharges to the bottle the valve is leaking. To do this you need to maintain adequate flow so as not to induce pressure cycling. Maintaining a clean fuel filter with minimal restriction is one key. Adding a lift pump to the supply side is the best thing that you can do. If you have already created a leaky relief valve then you need to replace it or fix it as outlined next. This is simply a plug that installs in place of the relief valve.
Usually reseating them will stop the leak, but you still have a potential bomb under the hood.In order to do proper diagnostics you will need a scan tool, diagnostic service information and some special tools such as a vacuum test gauge J OTC available from GM Special Tools or Freedom Racing Tool and Equipment. The high pressure pump builds rail pressure and delivers it to the fuel rail manifold where it flows through the injector lines to the injectors.
The fuel pressure regulator in the high pressure pump and the pressure regulating valve in the rail control rail pressure. The injectors have a piezo stack instead of an electro-magnetic solenoid. When energized, the piezo crystals expand, lifting the control valve off of its seat via a hydraulic coupler connecting plunger below to begin injection.
If the valve seat in the injector is leaking or the pressure regulating valve leaks then it will not build enough rail pressure to start the engine. The fuel injectors supply fuel directly to the combustion chambers of the engine. The fuel that is not injected into the combustion chamber is used to help lubricate and cool the injector and is routed back to the fuel tank.
This is required for proper fuel injector operation. Courtesy GM. The fuel system contains high pressure fuel up to 29, PSI. Do not use you fingers to find fuel leaks! High pressure fuel entering your bloodstream may result in amputation or loss of life. Check and record any DTC, look at snap shot data or save, do not erase codes prior to doing repairs, you will erase the snapshot and other relevant data.
If the smoke clears in less than 1 minute, this could be normal depending on temperature and altitude. Blue white smoke that burns your eyes is un-burnt fuel; cold temperatures, high altitude and excessive idle time all mean cold combustion and white smoke. The fuel filter housing AKA fuel conditioning module in GM literature is on the suction side there is not a fuel supply pump from the factory on pick ups and are prone to suck air.
Follow the GM fuel system diagnosis in the service manual. Note: The CP4. When they fail it is often catastrophic and they send metal particles throughout the high pressure side of the fuel system, causing further damage.
Note: The injectors are a piezo type CR injector see first page. Diagnosis is much different than the earlier generations. The engine control module ECM supplies a high voltage supply circuit and a high voltage control circuit for each fuel injector. The injector high voltage supply circuit and the high voltage control circuit are both controlled by the ECM. This is controlled by boost capacitors in the ECM. The injector is then held open with this high voltage.
Common Problems: Fuel Pressure Regulator
At the end of the injection event the ECM closes the injector by discharging the injector piezo stack. There are 3 reductant heaters. The ECM monitors the reductant temperature sensor located within the reservoir in order to determine if reductant temperature is below its freeze point. There are many safeguards and reset procedures that must be completed when repairs are made in order for the systems to function normally. If this happens the Reductant Fluid Quality Test will need to be performed with a scan tool.
This test can take up to 70 minutes with the engine running. The diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust to lower particulate emissions. During certain driving conditions the engine will perform a regeneration cycle, which will use additional fuel injections and the catalyst to heat up the exhaust temperatures to the point where the soot will be burnt out and form ash.
Any engine drive-ability issues or fuel system failures will cause premature plugging or failure of the DPF. If the DPF is plugging repeatedly or requiring excessive regeneration cycles there is probably another problem with the engine, turbocharger, fuel system, or EGR system. Use the following information regarding diagnostic trouble codes in addition to the normal diagnostic procedures outlined in the service manual or technical service bulletins.
In order to do proper diagnostics you will need a scan tool and some special tools such as a vacuum test gauge J OTC available from GM Special Tools. The fuel pressure regulator in the high pressure pump controls rail pressure. If the check ball in the injector is leaking due to erosion on the seat or the high pressure limit valve leaks then it will not build enough rail pressure to start the engine.
